Many high schools and colleges use technology to support learning, ranging from the use of computers as a tool to enhance writing skills to computer-based instruction (Wenglinsky, 2006). In some colleges and universities, online quizzes and assessments are essential to the learning process (Johnson, 2006). In recent years, though, interest in the use of distance learning in K-12 education has extended from the changing needs of the learner population, the importance of pooling educational resources and the increasing access to technology-based programming. There are specific gains that can be derived from distance learning systems, but there are also challenges that extend from varied views on planning, design, implementation and evaluation of programs in relation to emerging educational research. Opportunities The concept of distance learning encompasses many different types of instructional strategies and a range of different programming options. Distance learning has been used in the instruction of children who are homeschooled; in the creation of virtual high schools created to allow for on-line instruction; the use of collaborative educational experiences with educators and experts at different sites; and to encourage mentoring, tutoring and interactive opportunities between students at varied locations. Distance learning gives students a chance to take advantage of non-traditional programming that can give them access to a global wealth of information.
