cyber-revolution (MacGregor, 2001). The first transformation happened when instruction changed from being completely oral to incorporating the printed word into the educational process (MacGregor, 2001). The second transformation was the
move to instructors and groups of students gathering together in one location sharing resources, i.e., the campus revolution (MacGregor, 2001). This third transformation has emerged with the advent of advanced
information technology tools (MacGregor, 2001). It is indeed changing the way we perceive teaching and learning. Distance education as a concept and practice can be traced to the 1700s when
instruction was offered through the mail (MacGregor, 2001). Correspondence courses began to flourish in the 1800s (MacGregor, 2001). In the 1930s, education was offered on an experimental basis on
television (MacGregor, 2001). By the 1960s, satellite courses were being offered, at least on a limited basis but this took hold by the 1980s (MacGregor, 2001). The first higher education
Online course was in 1981 from "the School of Management and Strategic Studies at the Western Behavioral Sciences Institute in La Jolla, California, where all of the courses were offered
online" (MacGregor, 2001, p. 77). Although distance education encompasses all of the venues identified above and more, in todays vernacular, the term usually refers to Online education (Geracimos, 2004).
