life. Dispute resolution might be required, for example, even in a small mid-western college. Consider a scenario in which two professors disagree about who is entitled to be
first author on a soon-to-be released book. The professors both want first authorship because they consider it an important accomplishment in terms of career advancement. The problem is
that while each of them contributed to the book and worked together to produce it, no conclusive evidence has been provided as to who contributed the most to the books
production. Short of a long and costly lawsuit, the only way to resolve the dispute is to enter arbitration. If a situation
such as that described above were to enter arbitration there would undoubtedly be many complicating factors. Careers are on the line and the professors and other associated people might
even be tempted to be a little less than honest in their attempts to sway the arbitration to their advantage. The representative of one professor in this situation receives
a call from that professor, for example, informing him that he has been offered a tenured position at a prestigious university. The professor notes that while an announcement of
the offer will not be made for months, the offer has made him even more determined to pursue the claim that he is first author on the book in question
even more vigorously. That pursuit is not to be easy, however. The other professor in this case has hired an attorney as
well. Interestingly, that attorney calls the other representatives office to confide that she too finds the evidence as to who is actually entitled to be first author on the
