paper there has been the identification of three articles that use the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey to research if there is any disparity in the way depression is treated between different patient groups. Looking at each of these articles it is interesting to note the similarities and the differences. The first article is "Outpatient Treatment of Child and Adolescent Depression in the United States" published by Olfson (et al, 2003). The article starts by considering the incidence of depression n children, telling us that it has a rate of occurrence in primary school children of about 2% and then rising to between 4% and 8% at adolescences. There is also noted a high level of reoccurrence, with 45% of the children who suffer from depression seeing a major relapse when they are adults. Children that suffer from depression are highly vulnerable they are more likely to develop a substance abuse problem, have low academic performance, be at risk of early pregnancy and also be prone to an increased risk of suicide or having psychosocial functioning that is impaired. The usual treatment of children and adolescents has been the use if psychotherapy and it is the recommended first course of treatment in most cases according to the practice parameters of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. This is the approach adopted despite a lack of empirical evidence to suggest that this is the correct approach. The article argues that there has been evidence that for mild and moderate depression here has been evidence in controlled clinical trials to support the use of interpersonal psychotherapy and cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy may be able to have a significant impact in reducing the patients symptoms.
