In "The Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance" Cosgrove (1996) notes that nurses can complete either basic requirements
in nursing or obtain a more advanced degree. The most basic level of nursing is the licensed practical nurse (Cosgrove, 1996). Even at this level, the nursing field
is one which demands a continued commitment to education. That education, however, can come in many forms. In the nursing profession there is a misperception that licensed practical
nurses (LPNs) do not have the same level of responsibility and duty as registered nurses (RNs). Unfortunately, this misperception has translated in most cases to RNs receiving significantly higher
wages than LPNs. The purpose of this paper is to argue that many LPNs deserve wages that are comparable to those received by RNs. The thesis can be
presented that: by nature of their increased time on the floor, LPNs have developed equivalent
or superior skills and knowledge to RNs and, consequently, deserve the same wage. Spence (1973)
proposes that employers rationally offer higher compensation to those workers who have completed a higher level of education. Cameron and Heckman (1993) confirm this correlation in their work with
high school graduates, dropouts, and GED recipient. In nursing, we know that there are frequent variations in salary. Some are based on educational level, some on work experience,
