While it is a story about the American Dream, a story about a man who matures, a story about a man with sexual dysfunction, a story about time, and a story about many subtle things, it is ultimately a story about a man who finds himself disillusioned to the point of suicide. The following paper examines the theme of disillusionment, illustrating how, from a most basic position, overrides all other themes. Death of a Salesman Willy Loman is many things, just like most people are many things. All people struggle to some extent with their career, their family, their finances, and their ultimate dreams. And, while some people are content enough with the culmination of their lives as they mature, although they rarely ever truly achieve dreams, most people will come upon a time in their lives when they are disillusioned with their life, their work, the dreams, and ultimately themselves. This is the story of Willy Loman. Willy is a likable man. We see that he tries very hard to be successful. It is not his fault that he is perhaps not equipped with the depth or intelligence necessary to have truly found happiness in his small level of success. It is simply his nature to have dreamed big and ignorantly, never having possessed the tools to understand where he went wrong. Willy innocently believed the simple social statement that if one worked hard they would ultimately have everything they would want or need. This does not make him a victim of time, maturity, or sex. While all of these issues are part of Willys life, they are not the predominant part of who he is and his ultimate disillusionment. ...
