illustrate a boy, or young mans, experience with disillusionment and coming of age. They are different stories, taking place in different settings and presenting main characters that are different. Yet,
they are also similar in some ways as they address the elements being examined. The following paper compares and contrasts how the two stories offer up disillusionment and coming of
age. The paper focuses on how one simple incident changed the world of the two characters, and those incidents involved disillusionment and a coming of age lesson. Disillusionment
and Coming of Age in Updike and Joyce Interestingly enough, when first looking at the story from Joyce, Araby, one author illustrates how
the title is a romantic image, or symbol. "Araby is a romantic term for the Middle East, but there is no such country" (Gray). In essence, the title itself clearly
suggests a sense of disillusionment in referring to something that does not exist, and "of course, the story is about Romantic Irony, for the unnamed boy has a romantic view
of the world" (Gray). In this foundational condition of the story itself one sees how it is set up for disillusionment. In
relationship to Updikes story one author notes how, "The theme of A&P has to do with how Americans make choices that affect their entire lives based on false promises made
to them by an economic system that is based upon turning every idea, object and person into a commodity that can be bought and transformed into a status symbol" (Sexton).
