all the players in Shakespeares time were men, this seems incredibly reasonable that he would play even further on the aspect of disguises and role playing. For example, in the
story that will be discussed we would, in Shakespeares time, have a man playing the role of a woman who was playing the role of a man! With that in
mind the following paper examines the power of the theme of disguise and role playing, or identity, in Shakespeares "Twelfth Night." The Theme of Disguise "Twelfth Night is
Shakespeares most approachable comedy...This is one of Shakespeares cross-dressing plays" (Universe). In this story we have the primary character, Viola, who "dresses as a boy but causes much confusion. Orsino
thinks she is a boy and sends her with messages of his love to Olivia" (Universe). At the same time we "Olivia falls in love with the boy who is
really Viola and who has fallen in love with Orsino. All this is very foolish and foolery is a main theme of the play" (Universe). In fact, it seems that
"Shakespeare mentions Fool, foolish, foolery, folly and so on 80 times in the play. Feste, Olivias allowed fool who turns out to be perhaps the wisest character in the play,
ties this theme together" (Universe). In combination with this theme, the theme of foolishness, is the theme of disguise. In summarizing the many role playing/disguises that take place we
present the following: "Viola disguises herself as Cesario. Feste disguises himself as Sir Topas. Maria disguises her handwriting as Olivias and her intentions towards Sir Toby. Some of the
