Shakespeares work and that of Arthur Brookes Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet. Finally, viewpoints are given about the overall meaning of the tragedy in Shakespeares time.
COMPARISON OF BROOKES WORK TO THAT OF SHAKESPEARE It is said that William Shakespeare used Arthur Brookes Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet as a major source in his famous
play Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare made many changes in his version from that of Brooke. While Brookes story took place over a period of nine months in which
Romeo and Juliet spent three months together in love, Shakespeares story unfolds in four days. Romeo and Juliet spend only one night together in Shakespeares version. There was a
big difference in the two versions concerning the character of Mercutio as well. Mercutio, of course, is a major character in Romeo and Juliet and was scarcely mentioned at

was 16. The careful reader will also observe that Brooke writes in a critical manner of the rebelliousness of the two lovers and Shakespeare is more sympathetic to their
plight, considering the rebelliousness to being relevant to the lovers need to be together. THE CONCEPTION OF TRAGEDY While Romeo and Juliet is considered to be a tragedy of
fate, the characters in the play seem to be able to defy it in one sense. Each has no tangible character in particular other than those qualities that make
them lovers, and both Romeo and Juliet become developed as human beings once they have made some progress in freeing themselves from the age-old chains of their parents respective wills.
