war. It was a time when the United States had already gained their independence from Britain but yet many issues had obviously not been resolved as Britain was consistently hindering
and detaining any advancement of the United States. The United States declared war on Britain in 1812 and then Britain invaded the United States a couple of years later. The
following paper looks at some primary sources related to the war as it is connected with the burning of Washington. Discussion of the War of 1812 In looking
briefly at the war it is noted that, "There had been a long period of simmering disputes between the nations, including Northwest Territory land disputes, the British impressment of American
sailors, and British blockades of American commerce with France during the Napoleanic wars" (Kings Own, 2010). It was in 1814 that Britain marched upon Washington while many of the troops
were north and unable to defend the capital (Kings Own, 2010). They were essentially retaliating against the United States burning of the Canadian capital and their action was to burn
down the White House. In looking at this particular incident President Madisons wife, Dolley Madison, wrote to her sister and stated, "He
enquired anxiously whether I had courage, or firmness to remain in the Presidents house until his return, on the morrow, or succeeding day, and on my assurance that I had
no fear but for him and the success of our army, he left me, beseeching me to take care of myself, and of the cabinet papers, public and private" (Barrett,
