instance, race itself is a powerful word in our society. In many instances, race refers to issues relating to African Americans, but in actuality, race refers to the color
of all individuals. Whites are Caucasian race, while African Americans are from the black race. "Racism is the practice of discrimination and oppression based on skin color, physical
characteristics, continent of origin and culture" (Marshall, 2004). Ethnicity on the other hand indicates the location from where a person originates. For
example, two black individuals who obviously share the same race could have very different ethnicities. Perhaps one is of African descent while the other is of Jamaican descent.
Their place of descent is therefore their ethnicity. Another example would be comparing several white people. While they are all Caucasian (race), perhaps the first individual is Greek,
while the second is German, and the third is Costa Rican in terms of ethnicity. Discrimination occurs when one person or
group of individuals believes they are superior in some way to another group. Perhaps one of the most poignant and evident examples of prejudice in American history was during
the slave era. Clearly, the whites were extremely prejudiced against the blacks, which therefore justified (in their minds) their "right" to own slaves. They believed that from a
biological standpoint blacks were inferior beings. While slavery has long been abolished, instances of discrimination against individuals of all races and ethnicities continues to occur in our society on
