girl coming of age in Brooklyn, New York around the turn of the 20th century. There are so many elements and so many intriguing situations in the book that it
is difficult to truly illustrate the powerful narrative nature of this particular novel. The following paper discusses various aspects of the story. Discussion of A Tree Grows in
Brooklyn by Betty Smith This book, although told from an outsiders perspective, almost reads like an autobiographical novel for it really pulls the reader into the world of the girl
and the harsh realities that she faces, as well as the harsh realities her mother faces. The points of view are primarily those of the girl, Francie, and her mother,
Katie, and although incredibly different they are clearly both protagonists because they are the ones who seem to be truly facing their difficulties. In the case of Francie
the reader gets a sense of purity and innocence in a world that is very hard. She seems incredibly excited about many different little things and this makes the
story very heartwarming and real. For example, she is really excited about simple meals her mother can cook: "A loaf of stale bread was made into pulp with hot water
and mixed with a dimes worth of chopped meat into which an onion had been cleavered" (Smith, 2005; 44). This brings into play the simplicity of the setting and the
vivid imagery that Smith offers up to the reader. The individual who is reading this book can almost smell this meal and at the same time is perhaps astounded and
intrigued by the simple living these people experience because every little crumb of bread counts in the household. The book is filled with such images that offer up how they
