of their peers. This right has been claimed as something in many trials where it was deemed that a defendant did not get a fair shake. That is why jury
selection is so important. Jury selection is something of a more complicated process than ever before. Many people have gotten a sense that juries are not easily chosen.
From films like Runaway Jury to shows like Law and Order: Trial by Jury--in addition to real life cases played out on television--there is a sense that each juror is
valuable. One wrong pick and a case cold be lost. This is why every juror is important. Another thing is that each and every citizen is afforded the right to
a trial by his or her peers. This means that the jury should be made up of people just like the defendant. For instance, if women sit on a case
where a man is on trial for rape, there could be a bias. Similarly, if an all white jury sat on the OJ jury, they might have convicted him. Much
attention has been paid to race and gender as a result of Batson v. Kentucky, a case that challenged the right to peremptory challenges if the end result was a
jury steered by race. Still, the use of peremptory challenges is important to the judicial system. Peremptory challenges allows each side to dismiss jurors and provide no reason for the
decision. In other dismissals, the lawyers have to explain why they do not like a juror for that case. For example, the individual may have been married to a police
