1. Introduction In any organization there will be a reliance placed on the human inputs, the degree of this reliance
and the extent to way it can impact either positively or negatively is dependant on many factors; the industry and operation of the firm as well as the culture and
attitudes within the firm. Looking at companies, such as airlines, where there is a service provided, the potential value from the staff may not only be needed for operations, but
may even be a source of competitive advantage, airlines such as Singapore Airlines, where service levels have aided with the airlines reputation. There is also the potential for a converse
effect, where employees are not maximized in the way that they are utilized. There are many ways a firm may undermine the service, not only at the customers interaction points,
but within the firm as a whole. One airline that has issues in terms of the employees is Cathay Pacific, the firm is operating in a multicultural environment, but
appears to have issues with the underlying culture and the way in which there is discrimination taking place. In March 2010 the firm was facing a potential action by pilots
that were claiming racial discrimination based on the compensation packages that were given to expatriate pilots and the pilots that trained locally (China Staff, 2010). This has not been a
unique case, there are many others which demonstrate underlying cultural issues that indicate discrimination taking place, in 2001 there was a similar disputes based on claims of racial discrimination (South
China Morning News, 2001), in the same year the firm lost a case based on sex discrimination for discriminating against female employees, forcing them, to retire earlier than their male
