Discussion The school of thought that is now called deontological is usually credited to Immanuel Kant, who was attempting to find "the rational principle that would stand as a categorical imperative grounding all other ethical judgments" (Kay, 1997). This foundational principle would have to be "categorical rather than hypothetical, or conditional, since true morality should not depend on our individual likes and dislikes or on our abilities and opportunities" (Kay, 1997). The principles need are two: first, "always act in such a way that you can also will that the maxim of your action should become a universal law" and second, act so that you "treat humanity ... always as an end and never merely as a means" (Kay, 1997). That is, if a person does something, they will be pleased their actions are adopted as a model by everyone, and human beings are important, with dignity of their own (Kay, 1997). These two principles find Kants theory to be a "deontological or duty-based ethics : it judges morality by examining the nature of actions and the will of agents rather than goals achieved" (Kay , 1997). That is, Kant said that it was not the outcomes of actions that were important but the intent of the persons taking those actions-results didnt matter, intent did (Kay, 1997). Also the intent of the person in taking the action was important but not the consequences (Kay, 1997). This thinking is tied directly to the Golden Rule (Kay, 1997).
