effect. Rodney King was a black man in California. He had been drinking with some friends (Whitman PG; Rai PG). When King spotted the highway patrol car
behind him, he began speeding. King knew that he was drunk and that if the police caught him speeding, he would end up back in prison for violating parole.
A small army of police cars had joined the chase and a Los Angeles Police Department chopper was overhead when King finally stopped 8 miles later (Whitman PG).
King did nothing that justified his assault by the LAPD. The entire incident was discriminatory. King was a black man. The officers
that beat him were white. They used his drunkenness as an excuse to say that he responded slowly or not at all to commands to lie down and place
his hands above his head Several eyewitnesses said that King did lie down on his stomach when told to do so by officers (Rai PG). According to Whitman, Kings
behavior purportedly so alarmed the arresting officers that they mistakenly assumed that he was on PCP (Whitman PG). The police officers who attached King, lied about his behaviors during
