learn. The following paper examines the discoveries she made with her first school, Casa dei Bambini in Italy. Discoveries of Maria Montessori "Montessori had studied philosophy and psychology
and graduated in 1896 from Rome University Medical School. She was the first Italian woman to qualify as a physician, and was first appointed assistant doctor at the Rome University
Psychiatric Clinic" (History of Education, 2009). It was while she was a physician that she developed an interest specifically in children and first in childrens diseases (History of Education, 2009).
In 1901 she gained the position of Director of a new school that was connected with the University of Rome wherein she was faced with an institution that "was formerly
used as the asylum for the deficient and insane children of the working class and poor, most of whom were probably retarded or autistic. She insisted that the staff recognize
her patients need for stimulation, purposeful activity, and self-esteem" (History of Education, 2009). Through her experiences she began to realize that children were very capable of learning far more, and
in different ways, than most had presumed. She "set up a program to teach the young children how to care for themselves and their environment. She initiated a wave of
reform in a system that formerly had served merely to confine mentally handicapped youngsters in empty rooms" (History of Education, 2009). And, she also began her life in education as,
