voice religious objections to Darwins work, but the idea that their ancient ancestors came from Africa was in opposition to their presumed superiority.3 Nevertheless, a century of scientific investigation shows
verifies Darwins supposition that humanity did, indeed, evolve within an African environment as "Africa is the only continent in which evidence has been found for mans early evolution."4 The fact
that the European-descended white world has had such a difficult time accepting the fact that Africa is the birthplace of humanity is indicative of the way language and discourse have
frequently been utilized to create images and ideas about Africa that are at odds with African realities. Examination of African historical scholarship proves this point within a global context.
