Three Models of Classroom Discipline Skinnerian or Neo-Skinnerian Model Skinner proposed that people interact with their environment. A persons behavior is determined by the consequences of any given behavior. Reinforcers sustained a behavior and punishers decreased a behavior. The challenge is to determine the reinforcers that a student will find appealing enough to change their behavior. A reinforcer is a reward of some kind. Punishment may be as simple as withholding the reward. Skinner was working on personality but the theory has been translated into school discipline programs. It is a simple theory but not easy to apply. The teacher must first identify the specific behavior to change, for example, a student always speaks out during instruction, a student deliberately knocks other students work off their desks, or any other behavior that disrupts the classroom. The teacher needs to observe the frequency of this behavior, what happens in the environment just before it and what happens immediately after it. That includes where the student is sitting, where the teacher is, time of day, subject area, etc. The teacher explains to the student when he performs the desired behavior, he will be rewarded. Rewards can be anything from praise to something tangible. With students, the tangible will initially work better but eventually, the teacher may be able to reinforce the student with free time or other less tangible rewards. The approach requires clear messages from the teacher about what the behavior is and that it must change. ...
