discipline an employee, it is something every manager will face. There are many infractions that would lead to some sort of disciplinary action, even an oral warning. Examples include chronic
tardiness, chronic absenteeism, failure to complete tasks, rudeness in the workplace, insubordination, failure to follow organizations policies, dress code violations, theft or other dishonesty, unethical behavior and so on.
It is essential to have a disciplinary policy and procedure in place and published. It would be published in the employee/personnel manual. It is also critical to document what happened.
This is a very litigious society which is why the manager needs to document everything that happens. The first step is to determine how serious the infraction is. For
example being late twice in one week may easily be explained but being late three or four days every week cannot be explained and the manager would need to take
disciplinary actions. On the other hand, doing something that is unethical would be grounds for immediate dismissal. For the purpose of this essay, tardiness will be the infraction. This
particular employee has a habit of being late. Typically, the employee is tardy to work two or three days each week. When there is an infraction, the manager needs to
consider some things: Does the employee know that tardiness is considered a violation of rules? Is the rule consistently enforced? Does the employee know that chronic tardiness will lead to
