their daily tasks. There are approaches from which small business can benefit, however. The purpose here is to assess the disaster recovery plans of three small businesses. Fountain
City Mortgage Fountain City Mortgage is a residential mortgage company in Knoxville, Tennessee. It has six employees; its data system consists of
seven networked PCs. The company had no real disaster recovery program until only a few years ago, when flooding prevented both the owners and employees from gaining access to
the building in which the company operates. The owner, John Collins, says that he was aware of the need for disaster recovery before the flood, but he had not
taken steps to investigate or implement a disaster recovery plan at the time that the flood occurred. A local mortgage company is truly
local, at least Fountain City Mortgage conducted business only locally at the time. The flood did not affect the entire city, only that part of it in which the
company was located. While no one was able to access the building, real estate sales continued in less affected areas of the city. The result for Fountain City
Mortgage was that it lost nearly all of its business for an entire month. The flood waters entered the building and there was
damage to the paper files in the bottom two drawers of each file cabinet. The flood waters did not reach the desktop computers, however, none of which were on
