other events and topics in history. After reading The Origins of Chinese Communism the reader should be well informed about a number of things regarding how Chinese Communism got
its start. Yet, Dirlik suggests that it was something that emerged from the Comintern, and then, eventually, with the introduction of Marxism, communism would be implemented. The rest, as they
say, is history. Yet, the author provides a sense that without a certain a mount of applicable literature, and without the structure that would emerge at the time, there would
have been chaos. Perhaps China would not have become communist if it were not for the writings that emerged during the period, or it might be the case that things

also that there was a great deal of other literature around at the time. The central problem of the book then is how China came to be communist. What were
its influences? In investigating the literature, Dirlik is able to provide some information on how Communist China evolved, and it is not really what many people have come to think.
