suggest some substantial changes that occurred during the period of industrialization in the later half of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. While China and Japan
appeared to demonstrate a willingness for positive diplomatic interactions in the early part of this period, the changes that took place as these countries moved towards events surrounding the Second
World War, distinct animosities grew that would separate them. In understanding the changes that took place, it is necessary to recall the distinct factors that shaped the
process of change in Asia and the influence that Western ideologies had in the international identification of both of these countries. Further, it is also beneficial to consider the
defectors that defined changing views of both countries and created inherent conflicts. The international or diplomatic relationship between these two countries, as well as to the countries of the West,
took on distinct characteristics during the early period of industrial change. The modernization of Japan and China that resulted from industrial influences and political change at the turn of
the century was influenced by political, social and historical elements that would shape the view of change. For China, the experience of modernization was shaped by a political directive
towards militarization in the 19th century and then a call for revolt in China in the early 20th century that resulted in the development of nationalism. In Japan, the
