Identity theft is increasing, and so is the rate at which people are buying fake diplomas and misrepresenting their credentials to potential employers. This paper looks at both diploma forgery and identity theft, and the consequences to both the victims and those who perpetrate these frauds. Diploma Forgery The Internet can be both a blessing and a curse, and one of the things that causes people to scream about it is the way in which criminals can use it. They go phishing; they send emails asking people to help distribute millions of dollars from Nigeria; they pretend to be Paypal or Amazon.com and ask for credit card numbers; and they create phony businesses that pump out equally phony products-in this case, college diplomas. It seems unlikely that this sort of "business" could have done well before the Internet; with it, its booming. The upswing in phony diplomas is a significant problem for degree-granting institutions, "leading to fears of academic fraud and a constant legal battle by universities to protect their good names" (Rock, 2006). At Kansas State University, officials "recently instructed their trademark-licensing agent to send a cease-and-desist letter to a Web site that offered a fake Kansas State University diploma and transcript for $249.99" (Rock, 2006). The same thing could be, and probably is, happening at other colleges (Rock, 2006). The web sites usually advertise the diplomas as "replacement or novelty diplomas" and have disclaimers saying that they should not be used "in place of authentic sheepskins" (Rock, 2006). But there is, of course, no way for the owners of the site, even if they are legitimate, to monitor their customers to make sure theyre not passing off the diplomas as the real thing. ...
