a whole. Dioxins are a groups of chemical compounds which have been proven to have adverse effects on human and animal health. Exposure to dioxins can come through
a variety of mechanisms. These include absorption through the skin, ingestion, and inhalation. Soils, foods, water, and air can all be contaminated with dioxins. Chronic exposure to
PCBs has been linked to substantial changes in hormone balance, reproductive problems, teratomas and carcinomas in animals. Long term exposure to
dioxins is believed to result in reproductive or developmental effects, effects which can occur as well with only limited exposure during critical times. Such impacts could translated into changes
in behavior or even weakened immune responses. While dioxins such as PCBs are produced intentionally, many of these toxins are ancillary pollutants of industrial and other human activities ranging
from activities as diverse as burning wood, coal and oil or simply burning household trash in the back yard. Some can even be produced by natural processes such as
forest fires. Interestingly, the three primary producers of dioxins are municipal waste incineration, backyard refuse burning, and medical waste incineration (Environmental
Protection Agency, 2006). Medical waste incineration is particularly fascinating in that while incineration has proven to be safer than other forms of exposure in terms of biological contaminants, it
is of increasing concern because of the levels of dioxin associated with it. The common factor in each of
