the larger picture of the Scandinavian world. Introduction Poetry is a vital element of any culture. It holds the heart, and some would say the soul of the community,
or the culture at large. That much has not changed in the history of the "two-legged." Not much remains of Anglo Saxon poetry. About 10% of
about 30,000 lines form the story of Beowulf, an epic heros journey set in Denmark and Sweden, in the sixth century. The "digressions" of the poem tend to serves
as connectors, or "verbal doorways" which link the poem and its legends with larger worlds. Digressions The digressions in this poem seem to work at three levels. We have
already said that the digressions themselves serve as connections. The digressions of Beowulf connect our story with the legends of the past, the actions of the present, and the
hopes of the future. One might say that they are the verbal equivalents of the wyrds, or the fates, which hold the threads of our lives in their hands.
If our theory is accurate, the digressions serve as portals of time, and remind the listener that he is able to move about in all of them, through the
words of the poem. An example of such a digression within the poem would be the recitation of ancestry. We are told of the old Danish King Heremod (before the
coming of Scyld and Hrothgars line). He was a cruel and greedy man, far removed in actions and style from the generosity of the present ruler, Hrothgar, and his
