The hypothesis can be presented in fact that if digital x-rays are to be used in mainstream dentistry then improvements need to be made in the quality of the image produced. In theory digital x-rays have much to offer general dentistry. The technology simplifies the old procedures for obtaining x-rays and is much more considerate of patient comfort. Old x-ray technology relied on film exposure. This meant that the patient was required to insert a piece of film into their mouth and to hold that film in a particular position while the x-ray technician took the image. With digital x-rays film becomes a relict of antiquity. The image is taken through the use of a plastic sensor that is connected to a computer. The sensor is inserted in the mouth, the dentists turns on the x-ray machine, and an image of the patients teeth is immediately projected onto a computer screen (Lavine, 2000). Like any new technology, there are certain considerations which must be made in regard to digital imaging in radiology. Not the least of these are the operational issues such as what types of networking technology will be employed and associated digital image management issues (Furlow, 1999). These considerations include careful thought regarding the specifics of digital image acquisition, storage and communication in particular (Furlow, 1999).
