From family mementoes to their use in the media, photographs are a part of society, and it would be unusual to find a family without a camera. This type of photography has also spawned an entire industry, not only in the production of the cameras, but also the accessories that are required, such as film and processing services. These are all requirements with analogue film. However, with the arrival of digital technology in the photography field this is all poised to change, and with digital photography becoming more popular it is likely to change the industry, the way film is used and thus impact on society at a relatively basic level. There are those that argue digital technology will take over form the older photographic methods, however, may also argue that the position may be one of complimenting it. The decline is likely to occur, as we may draw a comparison between black and white photography and the advent of colour photography. Black and white is still used for the artistic perspective that it brings, but the mainstream has adopted colour. The drawback in digital photography at the current time is the cost, not only of the cameras, but also the equipment needed to access the photographs, such as computers, printers and even special printer paper. It is therefore interesting to consider the role of digital photography, examining how it works, and how it may be seen as inferior or superior to analogue.
