screening for breast cancer has been standard practice for a generation. It has been credited with saving the lives of many women in that breast cancer is among the
most treatable of the "common" cancers. As is the case with other types of cancer, early detection remains the key to successful treatment.
Breast cancer is not a single disease, but rather a family of more than 20 types of cancers that can attack the breast (NIST GCR 03-844, 2005). Some
can be present for many years before becoming large enough to be detectible by standard mammography; others are quite aggressive and the consequences of a missed diagnosis can be quite
grave. Accuracy It is the position of the American Cancer Society that "the overwhelming weight of evidence shows that mammography saves lives" (NIST
GCR 03-844, 2005). This usefulness does not preclude the desirability of improvement, however. The National Cancer Institute stated in 2002 that standard mammography returns false negatives at a
rate of 20 percent (Screening Mammograms, 2002). "False negatives occur more often in younger women than in older women because the dense breasts of younger women make breast cancers
more difficult to spot in mammograms" (Screening Mammograms, 2002). Additionally, standard screening mammograms carry a false positive rate of up to 12 percent
(NIST GCR 03-844, 2005). Though this form of inaccuracy is not physically threatening as is the false negative, it still is problematic in that it creates a great deal
of anxiety in the patient and unnecessary testing and plans for removal. Alternative Approach Full-field digital mammography (FFDM) "uses electronic detector panels for
