humorous conditions and situations. In this play there are two very minor characters who are only seen for a very short period of time, and possessed of very few lines
in the play. However, they both serve to support or introduce or explain some aspect of the play and thus are clearly significant. The following paper examines, separately, the role
of Diggory and the Maid in She Stoops to Conquer. Diggory in She Stoops to Conquer In the beginning of this play the character of Marlow, along with
his friend Hastings, are on their way to the Hardcastles home where Marlow will meet his bride-to-be, Kate Hardcastle. They have never been there and when they stop for directions
and the man there plays a trick on them, telling them they are a long way off from the Hardcasttles and then directs them to an inn, which is actually
the Hardcastles home. The Hardcastles are aware that this prank is being played and so Mr. Hardcastle begins to instruct his servants about how they should behave, something they are
clearly not prepared for. Up until this point the humor is not incredibly obvious but with Hardcastles conversation with one of his servants, Diggory, and to a lesser degree
the other servants, the power and the foundation of the humor is laid out and the stage is set for deception and comedy. For example Hardcastle tells Diggory that he
