the value it possesses to other animals or other living things. In addition, there is more to intrinsic value than just the welfare of an animal such as the type
of food it is fed, how it is treated by its owner or master, and its living conditions. It also refers to the moral attitude the general public takes toward
the animal and whether animals should be given the same basic rights and respect that human beings receive. This ethical and philosophical debate carries great significance because when an animal
becomes endangered or on the verge of extinction, it is humans who must decide whether or not to take action. Both Rolston and Callicott agree that intrinsic value exists in
all animals, but they disagree on whether this intrinsic value is objective or subjective and determining this dispute can have crucial effects on what humans do when a particular animal
becomes endangered or extinct. Holmes Rolston, widely recognized as the father of environmental ethics, argues that intrinsic value in animals does exist and is entirely objective, which means humans
have no control over it. It just is. It is a fact. For example, people may argue love or God is objective because they have not control over it and
it exists in and of itself. There is no room for dispute and there is no way for humans to manipulate it. So for Rolston, it is impossible to dispute
