depictions seem critical, there are some realistic portrayals of this hard but fulfilling way of life. The variations in the way coal mining is perceived and subsequently depicted seem
directly correlated to an individuals background. Class, race, gender and personal experiences all play a role in shaping peoples impressions of this aspect of American history.
Most coal miners, of course, wee males. Most, in fact, were white males. There were, however, other races that worked in the mines.
Even women and children worked there at times. If any two factors more so than others shaped a persons perceptions of that work, however, it was class and personal
experience. Class, after all, is in many clases a reflection of such things as race and relative wealth and even power. Personal experience, in turn, is often the
result of class. They all shape human interactions. Lockard (37) writes that he carefully observed human relationships in the mining environment and that
he quickly came to the realization that there was a very important distinction between mine managers and miners. That distinction was that "one was there to drive the other
to take chances with life and limb in order to maximize output per unit of compensation" (Lockard 37). This distinction is echoed in practically every account of mining in
Apalachia. Some accounts, however, echo this distinction more subtly than do others. In most cases this difference is accounted for by the different echelons these individuals occupied in
