Our understanding of how we learn from and interact in our world has been forged by several key theorists. Among the more notable of these are Sigmund Freud,
Jean Piaget, Ivan Pavlov, and Charles Darwin. Each presented unique yet interrelated explanations of human behavior. Freud is particularly interesting
in regard to his views of how and why people behave in certain ways. Gay (1995) explores Freuds preoccupation with dreams and sexual instinct as they relate to learning
and behavior. Freud work regarding dreams is just one reflection of the fact that humankind has devoted centuries to finding an explanation for the phenomenon of dreaming.
Ancient man no doubt perceived dreams as some type of magical window into another world, a world in which one was variable invincible
to outside forces or extraordinarily sensitive to those forces. Freud was interested in removing the superstition from dream interpretation and more carefully defining both the physiological and mental processes
which lead to the phenomena. Freud viewed dreams as being a window into an individuals inner problems. He saw them as being a form of "wish fulfillment" (Gay,
1995, 151), contending that people dream of that which they are being deprived, i.e. money, food, sex and the other items or activities for which most individuals express a greater
desire. Freud suggested that dreams were a: "sort of substitute for the thought-process,
