a process through which the teacher provides multiple options for students to learn the material as well as multiple options for students to express or demonstrate what they have learned.
"Multiple" means three or four options, not a different option for every student. Tomlinson suggests there are three elements in the curriculum that can be differentiated: content, process and product
(Hall, 2004). Some add a fourth way in which instruction can be differentiated, by manipulating the environment and/or accommodating different learning styles (Theroux, 2004). Instruction cannot be differentiated, however, until
the teacher knows the readiness level for each student in a given subject. Teachers also need to know each students learning style. It should be pointed out that differentiated
instruction is not a new concept. It has been used for gifted and talented programs and in special education. B. What learner needs can be addressed There are always
students who are working below or above grade level in every classroom but it often happens that a student is not above or below grade level in all subjects. For
instance, a student may be behind in math but ahead in reading. It could be that the student needs to have instruction or the process of instruction take a different
form to catch up in math. Some students learn best when they are involved in activities, others when they read. Howard Gardner told us there are multiple intelligences (Wahl, n.d.).
Assessing students learning styles will allow the teacher to present material in each students strongest style. In Gardners work, he would say to present the material in a way that
