three children together, two daughters, ages two and four, and a son who is nine months old. The couple has struggled with unemployment and homelessness which have resulted in their
seeking support in a homeless shelter. Both Ms. A. and Mr. B. reported a family history of drug and alcohol abuse. Ms. A. and Mr. B. reported that they also
had substance use issues and that they both recently quit smoking marijuana approximately three weeks prior to their interview. The employment history of both Ms. A. and Mr. B. is
somewhat problematic. Both of these individuals have limited education. Ms. A. graduated from high school but Mr. B. did not, and dropped out at the end of ninth grade.
Mr. B. went directly into the workforce and held a variety of different types of jobs after leaving school. 1. The Role of the Helping Relationship and Theory of
Choice In addressing the needs of Ms. A. and Mr. B. in their relationship, the role of the social worker in the helping
relationships would be as facilitator through their transition, based on the setting of specific objectives. The social worker would provide support for the client, including developing objectives and creating
methods for assessing the clients efforts towards change. Individuals experience change in a variety of ways, and counselors can support transitions by helping individuals make the best choices
possible (Hudson, 1999). The theory of choice is that given adequate information and options, individuals will seek out the choices that benefit them the most (Hudson, 1999). Subsequently,
the counselor as facilitator should help define objectives that give Ms. A. and Mr. B. opportunities to evaluate options and make positive choices that will result in change.
