He gives an example of the idea that human beings terminate life if it is assumed that a child will be retarded, in order to spare the family and the individual suffering (Hauerwas 558). That is, some human beings believe that being dead is better than having to endure a life of retardation. Retardation is a focal point in this essay. Hauerwas writes: "The challenge is to know how to characterize retardation and to know what difference it should make, without our very characterizations being used as an excuse to treat the retarded unjustly" (Hauerwas 559). Hauerwas provides many topics in respect to how the world views suffering, suggesting that it is a social construction and for the betterment of the whole of society. That is, sometimes, the society claims that an individual is suffering so that it will have some benefit for those making the decisions. For example, a family awaits the death of a parent. They may love their father, but they want to hasten the death if in fact they believe he is suffering. They really also want to get on with their lives. Dying takes a toll on families. It is easier if the individual dies sooner than later in terms of finances and emotion. The point is that perhaps people rationalize their actions by using the concept of suffering as an excuse for certain choices. Yet, they do not really know what suffering is.
