Von Huben 8/2010 Please Introduction According to the dictionary, the word "perspective" has several meanings, including the way artists physically view their work as well as the point of view one has on various events. If 15 people see an event with their own eyes, they will still give 15 different versions of what happened. This is why eyewitnesses are notoriously unreliable. This paper considers the issue of perspective and the insights it generates in two works: Julius Caesar by Shakespeare; and the film October: Then days that shook the world, directed by Sergei Eisenstein. The play is an excellent example of perspective in its meaning of point of view, while the film gives examples of perspective as a physical quality. Discussion Eisensteins film is a silent, made in 1927; its subject is the 1917 October revolution which marks the beginning of Communist rule in Russia. Talking about perspective with regard to this film almost demands that the word be considered in connection with its physical manifestations, because Eisenstein uses his camera to force the viewer to consider things from certain perspectives, which then become very symbolic. For example, early in the film Eisenstein shows us a colossal statue of Alexander III, the "despotic Tsar," whose "huge image dominates the screen" (Sperber, 1977, p. 15). The scene is shot at twilight and its symbolic of two things: the power of the Tsars and the monarchy, and the fact that it is now fading away (Sperber, 1977).
