Discussion Websters defines change in many different ways, including to substitute one thing for another; to become different; to put on different clothes; and to ring a set of bells. And of course there is also change in the sense of currency-pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. Lets start with that kind of change, since it plays a huge part in the play. Caroline is a maid, making $30 a week, trying to support four children on that meager wage. As a result, she is deeply and constantly angry; it is really her character keynote. Noah is eight, an unhappy child still mourning the death of his mother. These two lonely people find some companionship in one another. Noah is always leaving change in his pants pocket, and his stepmother Rose tells Caroline that if she finds it, she may keep it: "From now on if you find / change in his pockets, / when you do the washing, / just keep it, just keep it / if he leaves it, its yours" (Kushner, 1998, p. 49). Caroline keeps refusing, saying she wont take money from a baby; meanwhile Noah keeps deliberately leaving coins, knowing that she is desperately poor. Then he leaves a $20 bill in his pants by accident, and this time she keeps it. Christmas is coming and shell be able to buy her children presents. When Noah demands it back, she reminds him that when he leaves money in his pants, its hers. He screams at her: "I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU! / Theres a bomb! / President Johnson has built a bomb / special made to kill all Negroes! / ...
