the case of Mary and Tom, a husband and wife who entered the therapeutic relationship seeking intensive sex therapy, the counselor neglected to investigate the potential theoretical background for the
problem (the causative factor related to their reason to enter a therapeutic relationship) and subsequently lacked specific goals and objectives linked to the theoretic al base. Mary and Tom
clearly entered the therapeutic relationship with a goal in mind, to increase their sexual function by address psychological and physiological factors causing sexual dysfunction. Mary and Tom, though,
sought intensive sex therapy and became confused when their therapist maintained that they needed marriage counseling. Most theoretical views of sexual dysfunction relate physiological changes to the underlying psychological
function of individuals within the marriage. If the marital union is in disharmony, it is likely that this can be reflected in dysfunction in the marital sexual relationship.
Addressing only the sexual dysfunction would be like putting a Band-Aid on a leaky helium balloon; there might be a temporary improvement in the problem and functionality returned for a
short amount of time, but ultimately, the situation will fail. In this case, the counselor should have identified potential causative factors related to the onset of sexual dysfunction,
through information gathered in the intake initial client interview. Directed questions could be used in this case to see if Mary and Tom have some similar perspectives on how
the dysfunction occurred. Rather than immediately introducing sex therapy techniques, the counselor should then introduce the idea that psychological functioning should be addressed first, in order to determine whether
