theories on architecture. A fictitious debate features Thomas Jefferson, Louis Sullivan, and Frank LLoyd Wright, each contending that their theory of an American Architecture is correct.
What might this debate be like? What arguments might these architects have made? Although all three architects are American, they have different ideas about American architecture. Jefferson (1781) wrote:
"Every half century then our country becomes a tabula rasa, wheron we have to set out anew, as in the first moment of serating it. Whereas when buildings are of
durable materials, every new edifice is an actual and permanent acquisition to the state, adding to is value as well as to its ornament" (p.154). Jefferson suggests that architecture has
a continually changeable quality. His Monticello has become infamous and it was his lifes work. Jefferson was a politician but he was an architect as well. It was an unusual
hobby. Jefferson borrowed stylistic ideas from Renaissance artists and it culminated, with Jeffersons touch, into a beautiful intricate building. An architects home tells a lot about his style. One
can then ask why should the actual structures not take on the personality of the owners? Clearly, they do. Frank Lloyd Wrights Falling Water House is an exemplification of his
own unique style. The Wright home is a functional piece of architecture that is both a home and a refuge from the world. It is also not designed
for those with a fear of heights, but rather, for those who prefer to be high above the world. It is a personalized statement but one would be hard pressed
to say that function does not follow form in terms of this example. It takes advantage of both breathtaking views and the resource of water. While both the Jefferson and
