ideologies is that each one professes to have only the best interests of the nation and the American people at heart. The common theme in this election, regardless of candidate,
is that they each advocate change from the countrys current course, while maintaining the liberties and traditions on which the country is founded. However, there are also differences involved. According
to Gerry (2003), a social studies teacher with a Masters from Oklahoma City University, finding a good site on the Internet that clearly differentiates between Democratic and Republican Party ideology,
in their current incarnations, a site which is scholarly and unbiased, is extremely difficult. This is due to the fact that each party in recent years has tried to extend
its influence to more and more of the electorate, which means that they have become increasingly similar in their stated positions. However, in general, the Democratic Party is characterized
as "liberal" while the Republican Party is thought of as "conservative." Gerry (2008) relates that the word "liberal" originated toward the end of the eighteenth century as means literally
"worthy of a free man." At that time, someone who was described as "liberal" was thought of as someone who is "independent, broad-minded, magnanimous, frank, open and genial" (Gerry, 2008).
Today, this term is used in a derogatory sense by conservatives to mean people who support "big government and wasteful, giveaway social programs" (Gerry, 2008). The Republican Party is the
traditional ideological home of conservatives, who are considered to be those people who resist change and favor preserving established institutions (Gerry, 2008). Traditionally, the Republicans are the party of fiscal
