has grown progressively bitter and bloody with the passage of time. The Sunnis now represent approximately 90 percent of the Islam world, and the Shiites a mere 10 percent
(Sunnis & Shiites, the great schism, 1999, sunnishi.htm). Nevertheless, the Shiites have proven themselves to be a group to be reckoned with. The Sunni-Shiite schism is not a
disagreement over real estate; rather, it is a distinct difference in religious interpretation which has affected both the practice of Islam and has had a significant impact on world history.
Although it may be difficult to comprehend now, the Sunnis and the Shiites once walked together, following in the footsteps of their Prophet, Muhammad. I. Historical Overview To
gain more profound insight into the differences in theological interpretation and practice between the Sunnis and the Shiites, the historical roots of each will be traced. When the great
prophet Muhammad, considered by Muslims as the true messenger of Allah, died in 632 A.D., he left know instructions regarding the selection of a successor, or caliph (Sims, 1998).
Therefore, his followers were left to collectively ask, "Where do we go from here?" An answer seemed to come in the form of Ali ibn abi Talib, who was
Muhammads cousin. He seemed to be the rightful successor, as he was also married to Muhammads daughter, Fatima, and their sons were direct descendants of the Prophet (Fellows, 1979).
