By - March, 2011 The following examination of literature investigates why people engage in dieting. Empirical research shows that there are numerous reasons why people make the conscious decision to diet, that is, restrict their food intake for the purpose of losing weight. They be motivated by the desire to prevent the development of lifestyle diseases, or to appear more youthful. These reasons are explored before drawing conclusions. The prevention of lifestyle diseases constitutes a really good reason for dieting, as being overweight and/or obese is associated with developing type 2 diabetes, as well as cardiovascular disease and hypertension. These diseases can be avoided by achieving a healthy weight for ones height, that is, a normal body mass index (BMI). However, the goal of improved health involves eating a healthy diet that supplies all of the bodys needs for health maintenance. In other words, it involves permanent changes in terms of diet, rather than temporary changes conceptualized as dieting, which is typically thought of as short-term. As this suggests, there is distinct difference between eating for health and dieting. Eating a healthy and balanced diet, combined with regular physical exercise, helps people achieve and maintain a normal weight. Dieting is associated with denial and is often involves severe food restriction that is ultimately self-defeating and unsustainable (Clark, 2010). Human metabolism has been shaped by millions of years of evolution to aid people in preserving their lives.
