one author, "in a 1985 poll of artist and critics, Velazquezs Las Meninas...was voted, by a considerable margin, the worlds greatest painting."1 While to some it may seem like simply a very well done and beautiful painting it is actually a painting that serves to offer the viewer some of the best examples of utilizing various approaches and elements known. The following paper analyzes and discusses the painting. Diego Valezquez Las Meninas In looking at Velazquez and his painting it is perhaps important to understand something of the man. According to one, "Velasquez was called the noblest and most commanding man among the artists of his country" and "Because of Velasquez great skill in merging color, light, space, rhythm of line, and mass in such a way that all have equal value, he was known as the painters painter."2 In light of this information one could well see that he was clearly an artist who paid attention to the most insignificant things around him. It is also important to note that he worked a great deal in Madrid as a court painter.3 It was while he was at court and painting that he was apparently inspired to paint this particular painting: "The idea to paint "Las Meninas" came to Velasquez when he was working in his Studio and suddenly the little princess and her entourage appeared."4 But, there is clearly far more to this painting. This is evidenced when one understands that hundreds of years later the painting still confuses and baffles people who try to understand it: "Las Meninas has engendered countless philosophical commentaries. Artists, too, have explored the paintings puzzles and paradoxes" and as such one cannot perhaps truly know why he painted this painting or what the thesis behind the painting is or war.5 ...
