point that the meaning of art can be interpreted through the prism of the critics own biases, Berger describes a detailed analysis of the work of Franz Hals, a seventeenth
century Dutch artist, in which he maintains that the critic strives to "invent a history that can retrospectively justify the role of the ruling classes" (Berger 108). This raises the
question of how art from other eras incorporates political and cultural messages and whether or not interpretations of art that encompass these topics illustrate the perspective of the artist or
the art observer. In other words, this illustrates the need to help students take into consideration historical context, as well as the political or sociological values that a particular artwork
may suggest. In regards to formulating lesson plans that encompass this aspect of art, this writer/tutor suggests selecting Diego Riveras mural Pan American Unity, which is on display at
the City College of San Francisco and formally titled Marriage of the Artistic Expression of the North and the South on this Continent. First of all, a lesson introducing students
to Rivera, who is considered to be the "greatest Mexican painter of the twentieth century," should begin with Riveras biographical background, which should include his utilization of Renaissance fresco painting
