As horrible as the impacts of the Nazi Party in World War II era Germany were, it can be contended that the Germans imposed the Nazi tyranny on
themselves. This contention is presented by a number of authors, not the least of which is William Shirer. In "The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich", Shirer proposes
that Adolf Hitler was one reason why the German folk reacted so positively to fascism. In Hitler, comments Shirer, the Germans had found their truly charismatic leader (Shirer, 1960).
As a result, most of the German population followed Hitler blindly throughout the 1930s and even into the 1940s as if according to Shirer "he possessed a divine judgment"
(Shirer, 1960, p.21). Indeed, the average German pledged their hearts to this charismatic man. Because of this, Hitler was able to impose the idea of fascism on the German
people because they were so blinded by his charisma. The reception Hitler received among the Germans is understandable to a degree.
He was, after all, a decorated hero from World War I (Shirer, 1960). In addition, he considered himself one of the "volk", another very endearing trait to the everyday
German citizen. Because of his record during World War I, and because of the general humiliation that the world had placed on Germany through the Treaty of Versailles following
World War I (plus the huge problems of runaway inflation) the Germans were ready to listen to a strong and charismatic leader. And Hitler was more than ready to
