World War two there was a very open, but very politically motivated rivalry between the US and the USSR in terms of military accompanied by very poor international relations between
these two countries. In reality the cold war was not limited to the US and the USSR there was the western block which included the US as the dominant
country, but also all the United States allies which included countries such as the UK, on the other side was the Eastern block, this was not only the USSR but
many other Eastern European. With the two super powers on opposite sides smaller nations felt they needed to be part of an alliance so that they would not be vulnerable.
The reason this as called the cold war is due to the way it took place at a distance with no actual fighting taking place. The change was a
reflection in the way international relations had changed due to the world entering the atomic age and the development of the nuclear bomb (Baldwin, 1995). The cold war meant a
new range of threats which were perceived as the threat of nuclear war, where traditional military forces would be of little use. A bomb could be launched and hot another
country with no need for any military personal to step on foreign soil. The United States had nuclear power and they had dropped the A bomb on Hiroshima and
then on Nagasaki, proving they were prepared to take extreme action. This decision was made by Harry Truman who at the time and in subsequent years stated that he had
no qualms about what he had done (Liffton and Mitchell, 1996). This dropping of the bomb is generally seen as the event that ended the Second World War, on which
