complex is that the primary characters are African American women growing up in a world that does not see black women as beautiful. The title of the story refers to
one of the primary characters, Pecola, who believes that life will be good and she will be beautiful if she only had blue eyes. The following paper examines particular elements
of this novel which speak to that reality possessed by Pecola. The paper examines the layout of the seasons, as sections, in the book and discusses the relevance of the
Dick and Jane themes presented at the beginning of each section of Morrisons novel. The Seasons and Dick and Jane For the most part the layout of the
seasons in Morrisons book primarily speaks to the fact that all people go through life in a particular manner, and the seasons will always come back around and around, representing
how life repeats itself. In addition, if we stop and imagine what the different seasons offer us in terms of symbols, we can perhaps argue that autumn is a time
when things begin to wither, a time when Pecola is perhaps looking for life in the midst of slow decay that is reflected in her home and her life. Part
of this is seen when she passes dandelions on the way to the store. "Why, she wonders, do people call them weeds? She thought they were pretty" (Morrison 41). When
she leaves the store, after being humiliated by the store owner, she finds them to be ugly, indicative of a dying season of innocence perhaps and hope and beauty: "They
