expected to become even more needed and more common over the next several years. Diabetes has been an official epidemic for several years and is increasing (DeNoon, 2003), and
of course kidney damage and failure is one of the leading negative effects of diabetes. In 2002, there were about "41 million people in the United States that have
pre-conditions that lead to kidney disease" (Kidney Caucus Chair Addresses NKF, 2002; p. 2). The American Society of Nephrology states that the demand for dialysis is increasing at a
rate of 8 percent annually (Attachment 2, n.d.). "By the year 2010, the number of dialysis patients is expected to jump to 650,000, from more than 300,000 in 2001"
(Attachment 2, n.d.). The bottom line is that need is expected to increase significantly during the next several years. As increasing numbers
of individuals begin to experience kidney failure regardless of the reason, there will be increased demand for regular dialysis. Description Hemodialysis is a
procedure in which an individuals blood flows into a hemodialysis machine where it is filtered and "cleaned" of impurities and toxins, then returned to the patient. It is a
life-preserving treatment occurring in end-stage renal disease, when kidneys are in the process of failing or have fully failed and cannot perform that function. Without dialysis, the patient with
