Defined by DSM-IV-TR criteria as "a pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and effects, and marked impulsivity beginning by early adulthood..." (American Psychiatric Association, 2000), borderline personality disorder causes the individual to search for some type of protective, nurturing relationship that he or she feels ultimately makes up for what was missing during the emotionally formative years; however, this search most often leads to a superficial mend time and time again rather than one that is substantive, ultimately creating a cycle of that only perpetuates itself. By employing dialectical behavior therapy - which is often referred to as therapy of opposites - the patient gains the benefit of utilizing "opposing polar concerns in a meaningful contiguity [to convey] insights through the imagery that emerges from such a juxtaposition of opposites" (Hannush, 2007, p. 7). II. THERAPEUTIC APPROACH Dialectical behavior therapy utilizes many of the same components as cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and, as such, gains a number of the same benefits afforded this long-standing and favored approach to therapeutic applications (Swenson et al, 2001).
